SaveSURGE News

Good day everyone and welcome to the 43rd edition of SaveSURGE News! It's your best source for news in the world of SURGE.

It's been a busy, busy week so let's get right to it…

Sightings Report
There were an impressive total of 8 new SURGE Sightings added since the last edition of SaveSURGE News. They are in: AL, FL, GA, IA, MI & TX (4).

Sadly, there were 6 deletions. They were in: AZ, CT, FL, IN, MO & TX.

Currently, there are 182 SURGE Sightings listed. Thanks to everyone who's been kind enough to report a Sighting!

AP Article Helps Spread the Word
April 15 of any year is usually a bad day for Americans. We've become accustomed to the annual pain-in-the-rear that is otherwise known as Tax Day. And, even though this year's edition started off with me crying into my ever-dwindling checkbook, it quickly turned around as I learned that SaveSURGE.org was mentioned in an Associated Press article!

The article out of Stockholm, Sweden is about a court case involving the Coca-Cola Company. As many of you know, our beloved SURGE has a cousin beverage in Norway named URGE. The case comes from a family with the last name Urge who decided to try and have a Swedish court repeal Coke's trademark of the name, as they did not want their last name associated with a soft drink. As crazy as this story sounds, what makes the case all the more weird is that URGE isn't even sold in Sweden! Coke simply trademarked the name in that country in case they ever decided to sell it there and to prevent other beverage companies from using the name.

Long story short, the case was pretty much thrown out. It was obvious that this was just about some people who wanted to make some quick cash. Normally, I'd never defend a large corporation but these people just wanted to scam Coke.

Now the good part: the end of the article gives some background info on SURGE and mentions SaveSURGE.org!!!! This was absolutely great publicity for both SURGE and the site. In fact, the site has recorded over 8,000 page views in the past 24 hours after the article hit the web, easily the best we've ever done.

The article hit the web at approximately 11:45AM eastern time on Yahoo! News and has also been posted on sites such as: Salon.com (one of the top stories on the front page!), The Miami Herald, The San Jose Mercury News, CBS Marketwatch, iWon.com, New York Newsday, Boston.com, The Seattle Post Intelligencer, The Baltimore Sun and even to our friends down under at News Interactive, Australia. Since the article came out in the middle of the day, we're not sure how many print publications decided to run the story. If you see the article in your local paper, please e-mail us at: surge@savesurge.org.

You can view the full text of the article in our SaveSURGE.org in the News Section, located under the About menu.

Everyone Head to Birmingham!
A great revelation turned up this week in a most unlikely place. It turns out that Birmingham, Alabama still produces cans of SURGE! A SURGE fan named Christy wrote in this week and said that "You can get surge pretty much at any grocery store and Coke vending machine in Birmingham". Definitely great news!

SaveSURGE.org Bottler of the Week
Looking at the Sightings page, there is one beautiful and strange place that has never been listed: New Orleans, LA. I think it's time we let the wonderful folks at Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc. - New Orleans know that the Big Easy sure could use some SURGE! And hey, check out their address, how can they not bottle SURGE with a street name like Citrus Blvd.?

Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc. - New Orleans
5601 Citrus Blvd.
Harahan, LA 70125

For your convenience we've provided a form letter that you can just print, sign and mail on our How You Can Help page.

Would you like your local Coca-Cola bottler to be the next SaveSURGE.org Bottler of the Week? If so, e-mail us your name, hometown, zip code and any bottler information you might have (it's ok if you don't know who your bottler is, we should be able to locate it for you) to us at: surge@savesurge.org.

What's the Best Way to Bring it Back?
Our SURGE poll asked you, the loyal SURGE fan, the best way to bring your favorite Fully-Loaded Citrus Soda back to store shelves. Here's what you had to say:

28.3% Write your local bottler
27.7% Move to Norway
24.4% Write to Coca-Cola
13.1% Stage a huge protest
6.3% Spend lots of $ on eBay

Because of all the traffic the AP article drove in, 458 of you voted! For quite awhile it seemed that "Stage a huge protest" was going to win out but within a couple of days it showed up next to last. Looks like we should be writing those local bottlers more and more!

That does it for this week. Thanks for your support and more importantly, your love of SURGE!

Sincerely,

Eric Karkovack
