Nick's SURGE Movie
------------------------------
Nick is a frequent contributor to SaveSURGE.org and his latest contribution
is a very special one that deserves our attention. Over a period
of several weeks, he has worked tirelessly to create a SURGE movie
using Macromedia Flash. It's a tribute to SURGE, SaveSURGE.org and
to all SURGE Fans. He used many of the photos from the website and
also some bits of the original SURGE television commercial.
The movie is just a blast to watch and is extremely
creative. It runs about 5 minutes, features an awesome soundtrack
(Fatboy Slim) and is something EVERY SURGE fan must see! You can
view Nick's movie in our For
the Love of SURGE section. Thanks Nick!
We'd also like to send a shout-out to Tim Kelly,
who is working on a SURGE documentary!
Save Citra Too?
----------------------
More sad news for lovers of citrus soda came in last week as it
appears some Coca-Cola bottlers have decided to discontinue Citra.
Citra was brought out not too long after our beloved SURGE and was
actually a by-product of the research Coca-Cola conducted while
creating SURGE. It was really brought to market as a caffeine-free
alternative citrus soda to compete with Squirt.
Unlike, SURGE, Citra never really had a whole
lot of marketing behind it. There were a few early promotions (most
notably on MTV) but Coke never really seemed to put much effort
into getting the product out there. It was never released nationwide
and thus it never became the popular beverage it potentially could
have been.
As for taste I, for one, was a big fan. It's my
second favorite soda (a distant second to SURGE, of course). Many
people compare it to a much sweeter version of Fresca and I can
definitely see where that comes from, although Fresca itself is
not a beverage I like. In fact, if you've ever seen a bottle of
Mexican Fresca, the logo and color scheme are dead-on with that
of Citra.
Citra was still available in my area of Pennsylvania
just a few weeks ago in 12packs only. Its demise was not unexpected
because for the last several months, I noticed that each 12pack
I purchased had an expiration date of 3/10/03 on it which led me
to believe that this was indeed the last batch. The same thing happened
with SURGE as well. So, like any obsessed soda fan, I went around
buying up all the 12packs I could find this past weekend (I should
have done it a week earlier) and came home with just three.
As luck would have it, during one of my grocery
trips, I spoke with a friendly Coca-Cola employee who was stocking
the shelves (he just put an extra row Fresca in my beloved Citra's
old space) and he acknowledged that he too will miss Citra. He even
went so far as to say that he wished his bottler would keep Citra
and discontinue Diet Coke with Lemon, which apparently just sits
on the shelves and collects dust.
Another tidbit I was able to learn was that Mello
Yello is apparently also on its way out, at least in my area. Very
few stores around here ever carried it (no grocery stores that I've
seen) and there is no way that it has outsold the very beverage
it replaced, SURGE.
Perhaps this is a good sign that SURGE may be
ready for a re-launch, considering Coca-Cola now has an extremely
limited choice of citrus sodas! The lowly Fresca certainly will
not serve as a long-term replacement and if it did, I'd have to
think Coke's already small share of the citrus market will be in
even worse shape.
But, for now, I must say that I will miss Citra.
I will ration my few remaining cans and hope for better days to
come.
