Eric’s Mexican Soda Adventure
As many of you know I recently vacationed in Play Del Carmen, Mexico. Besides the beautiful beaches and exotic animals, part of the fun I had on this trip was trying out many different sodas. As sad as this may sound to some, I was actually more interested in drinking soda during this trip than any alcohol!
On the whole, I found Mexican sodas to be a bit sweeter. In Mexico, beverage companies still use pure cane sugar to sweeten their sodas while here in America they most often use the cheaper high-fructose corn syrup.
Among the highlights:

Mexican Fanta (left) &
Fresca Toronja Rosa
|
Coca-Cola Classic – The real thing tasted exactly like the real thing! This is the Coca-Cola I remember from my childhood. Very sweet and refreshing. I consumed more of this than anything else.
Fresca – Those of you who know me well know that I do not drink American Fresca. I find the taste to be much too bitter. However, Mexican Fresca is a whole different story! The cane sugar makes all the difference and it makes Fresca taste a lot like Citra (aka Fanta Citrus), though a bit sweeter. This was my favorite beverage!
Fanta Orange – Fanta being my favorite orange soda here in the states, I was very excited to try the Mexican version. Again, Mexican Fanta is a bit sweeter than its American cousin. I feel like the American version has a bit more strength to its orange flavor though which makes this a tossup.
Fresca Toronja Rosa – This is a new flavor in Mexico. The name Toronja Rosa translates to Pink Grapefruit in English (thanks Google!). The soda itself is pink and has a very powerful grapefruit flavor. Not bad, but a bit too potent for me!
Mirinda Naranja – This is an Orange soda from Pepsi. The taste reminds me a bit of Mountain Dew LiveWire, but with a little smoother orange flavor. Overall this was very refreshing. I had a few of them during my trip to a local ecopark that only served Pepsi.
Pepsi – Slightly sweeter than its American equivalent but also a bit watered down. Better than the American version but not what I was hoping for.
Pepsi Twist – The Mexican Pepsi Twist uses lime instead of lemon. Not bad.
Sprite – Much sweeter = much better!
Unfortunately, no matter where I looked during my journey I was unable to find Beat. Beat is a Coca-Cola citrus soda that I’ve been told has a resemblance to Mello Yello. At one time we at SaveSURGE.org thought it might be the Mexican equivalent of SURGE (green color, similar packaging) but I am currently unable to confirm that it is still produced.
Still, it was a great trip with many great sodas!

12 Pack Auction Ties Record
A long-expired 12 pack of SURGE auctioned for a record-tying $152.50 back on November 14, 2004! The bidding was fierce and in the end this auction tied the previous record which was set back in 2003.

Poll Results – Is there a Vault?
The latest SURGE Poll asked you: Do you believe that Coke is planning a new citrus soda named Vault that tastes similar to SURGE?
39.4% - Unsure
38.2% - Yes
22.2% - No
Total Votes: 157
The slight majority is unsure if Vault really exists and there is also a large number of you that believes there is no such thing. Still, it is fun to speculate about the existence of a new citrus soda from Coke. Is Vault real? We’ll just have to wait and see.
That’s all the time we have for this week. Thank you SURGE fans for your continued support!
Sincerely,
Eric Karkovack
